Abstract(s)
Portugal.
This dissertation aims to study the development of rural tourism in the regions of Alto Tâmega and Terras de Trás-os-Montes, with the main objectives of analysing how rural tourism can develop the interior regions of Portugal, identifying the factors that allow its development and understanding how the residents’ quality of life can impact the development of these regions. Thus, a literary review of the main concepts of tourism and rural tourism, sustainable development and the Quality-of-Life construct was carried out. To achieve the said objectives, a case study was applied to the mentioned regions in order to comprehend their needs, aiming at characterizing them as a tourist destination and identifying their potential. In addition, surveys were carried out by questionnaire among residents and visitors of the Alto Tâmega and Terras de Trás-os-Montes regions, through a simple random sampling, in order to understand the population’s perception concerning their tourism development. A total of 226 surveys were obtained for the investigation. The analysis of the results allows us to observe that the respondents consider rural tourism beneficial to their communities, due to the interest in gastronomy and natural heritage, the region’s economic development and increase employment opportunities. It was found that the cost of living, seasonality and the loss of local identity are the main factors that can harm rural development. It is a relevant study because investigations on the segmentation of residents according to their perception of the impacts of tourism are scarce in the Portuguese scientific literature, in addition to the fact that there are not many studies in the northern regions of Portugal.
