Abstract(s)
It is estimated that one in seven couples have used Assisted Reproduction Treatments (ART). In Portugal, infertility has a prevalence between 9 and 10 percent, and led to the birth of 2733 children in 2018, through the application of several ART techniques. These numbers mean that in that year, about 3% of all children born in Portugal result from the use of ART techniques. Some authors refer that the use of ART treatments remains very dependent on the financial capacity of the couples. That led to establishing the main objective of the present paper, which aims to increase knowledge from the user's perspective, of the economic and financial burden that underlies the use of ART. To achieve the main objective, primary information was collected through a questionnaire applied to a non-probabilistic convenience sample. The questions asked intended to find more about the sample behavior towards ART expenses and their family economic strain. From the questionnaire, 186 responses were obtained, of which 173 were considered valid, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the analysis carried out to the family economic effort, it was possible to conclude that about half of the sample (56.6%) is in an average family economic effort and, although they have concerns about the payment of ART expenses, they did not feel financial limitations of access, nor do they consider that the ART has compromised their financial future.
