Abstract(s)
The modern world requires engineers to lead technological development, whether by
creating new technologies or using existing ones more sustainably, with significant eco-
nomic and social impacts. While technical knowledge traditionally comes from years
of experience, engineers are now required to confront real-world challenges earlier,
ideally during their academic training. Practical learning experiences equip future en-
gineers with a strong understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applica-
tions, while also developing the essential hard and soft skills necessary for their profes-
sion. However, providing practical learning experiences in the field of turbomachinery
as closely as possible to reality is often challenging, due to the difficulty in replicating
and maintaining the necessary operating conditions with the equipment typically avai-
lable in educational institutions. The present work constitutes a contribution for future
insights on hydraulic turbomachinery lectures, serving as a portrayal assessment of
current testing methodologies at Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Coimbra (ISEC)
and Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH). The theoretical concepts rela-
ted to each turbomachine are addressed, and the experimental setups and methodolo-
gies used to obtain performance curves and other relevant quantities that characterize
the behavior of the turbomachines are described. The results are discussed in detail
from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives, linking them to their theoretical
foundations or other available literature whenever possible. Analogies are also drawn
between the real operation of hydraulic turbomachines and their reproduction in la-
boratory and pedagogical contexts. The richness of the content presented, particularly
from a pedagogical perspective, is reflected in a vast and diverse set of data collected
through various testing methodologies and setups, with the primary goal of advancing
engineering education in the field of turbomachinery.
