Porto.
This document is the culmination of a personal and professional development process, included within the scope of the Master's degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of Nursing for People in Critical Situations, taught at Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto. The content of the report emerges from the skills development process, focused mainly on the Curricular Units “Professional internship with report – Module I and Module II”, focusing on the common and specific skills of the specialist nurse. The development of specialized clinical skills took place in care units designed to care for critically ill patients, so I begin the report by highlighting its contributions in this process, in a descriptive and reflective way. Next, in order to make the decision-making process regarding nursing care clear, the process of designing care is explained based on a fictitious case, but which characterizes a situation of a person in a critical situation, receiving treatment in a health care unit. Finally, a reflection is made on the process of developing skills, based on the experiences gained during the internships, the literature research carried out to support the decision and action, and reflection with colleagues, tutors and teachers. Completing a master's degree course presupposes that the person holding the degree has developed skills and the desire to carry out and continue their learning independently throughout their professional life. In order to demonstrate the acquisition of this skill, this document incorporates, in the annex, a literature review entitled “Blood pressure assessment: from evidence to clinical practice”. Evaluating the evolution of blood pressure is a frequent and fundamental intervention in the provision of care to people in critical situations. In this sense, obtaining accurate and reliable blood pressure data becomes essential in the decision-making process and in the prevention of complications.
