A North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) é uma aliança com 72 anos de existência que foi fundada para o período da Guerra Fria e sobreviveu no fim daquele período. A NATO teve de se adaptar e transformar para responder aos novos desafios que foram e vão surgindo. A presente investigação contribui para a transformação da Aliança para o horizonte de 2030.
Para definir o guia orientador da pesquisa, determinou-se que o objetivo geral era formular contributos para a transformação da NATO no período de 2020-2030, olhando para o laço transatlântico e para as possibilidades de expansão da Aliança. A NATO começou com 12 nações e hoje é constituída por 30 membros.
A base de partida para a investigação assentou em estudos sobre o futuro da NATO, produzidos pela Aliança e por think tanks, e no Relatório NATO 2030: United for a New Era. A pesquisa trabalhou dois conceitos, a defesa do espaço Euro-Atlântico e o Alargamento da Aliança na perspetiva da defesa daquele espaço. Concluiu-se com contributos nas dimensões política e estratégica para a transformação da NATO, sistematizados num fluxograma de decisão com projeção de cenários futuros da Aliança no horizonte 2030.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a 72-year-old alliance that was founded for the Cold War period and survived at the end of that period. NATO has had to adapt and transform to respond to the new challenges that have been and are emerging. This research contributes to the transformation of the Alliance to the 2030 horizon. To define the research guide, it was determined that the overall objective was to make contributions to NATO's transformation in the period 2020-2030, looking at the transatlantic tie and the Alliance's expansion possibilities. NATO began with 12 nations and today consists of 30 members. The starting basis for research was based on studies on the future of NATO, produced by the Alliance and think tanks, and the NATO Report 2030: United for a New Era. The research is based on two concepts, the defence of the Euro-Atlantic area and the enlargement of the Alliance in the perspective of the Euro-Atlantic area. It was concluded with contributions in the political and strategic dimensions for the transformation of NATO, systematized in a decision flowchart with projection of Alliance’s future scenarios for the 2030 horizon.
