Abstract(s)
nível do conhecimento náutico no século XIX.
This master’s dissertation intends to analyze the navigation in Portugal, in the 19th century. Aiming to contextualize the book Guia Nautica ou Tratado Pratico de Navegação of João Peregrino Leitão, published in 1865, the thesis describes the main evolution that took place in international terms on this subject during this century. This analysis intends to assess the importance of Leitao’s work in the Portuguese context and discuss the statement of the author that defends that there was no similar book at that time in Portuguese. João Peregrino de Leitão was born in Madeira Island in 1821 and started his military career on 29th September of 1835. Leitão attended the naval course in Academia Real dos Guardas-marinhas and in Escola Politécnica, being promoted to midshipman on 1st December of 1842. To better frame the manual under analysis in the international context of navigation knowledge, the main developments occurred in the 19th century are summarized in the second chapter of this dissertation. In the next section, the thesis presents the most important educational changes occurred in Portugal during this period aiming to place the book of Leitão in the existent educational context when it was published. In the last part of this thesis, a comparative analysis is performed between Leitao’s book and Piloto Instruído written by Costa e Almeida and published in 1830. The content of both manuals is analyzed in detail and by performing this task is possible to conclude that there are no significant differences between the two books. Since Guia Nautica was published after Costa e Almeida’s book, the dissertation advocatesthat Guia Nautica does not present an innovative approach to the navigation topic in the Portuguese context. By stating this, the dissertation goes against the initial statements of Leitão in his book preface titled “AOS HOMENS DO MAR”.
