Abstract(s)
Introduction: Peri-implant diseases (PID) have become a critical focus in dentistry with the increasing prevalence of dental implants. Despite this rise, a comprehensive understanding of these diseases is still evolving. In Portugal, there is a notable lack of scientific literature and concrete statistical data on dentists' knowledge and practices regarding PID, highlighting the need to assess how Portuguese dentists perceive and manage these conditions. Objectives: This study aims to determine the level of knowledge about PID among portuguese dentists. By examining responses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of PID, we seek to evaluate their alignment with scientific evidence and identify potential knowledge gaps. The next step may involve formally validating the questionnaire and potentially developing new clinical guidelines if necessary. Materials and Methods: From February to April 2024, a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among dentists in Portugal, using a 27-question questionnaire on PID knowledge and management. The questionnaire's validity was ensured by applying it to 10 dentists, including generalists and specialists, and making necessary corrections. Participants were recruited via closed sociais networks aimed at dentists. Results: A total of 113 responses were analyzed, from professionals with contact with implants, including specialists and general practitioners. The majority had more than 10 years of experience. Conclusion: Overall, professionals demonstrated a solid knowledge base regarding PID, though specific areas still showed gaps. Most professionals acknowledge the importance of oral hygiene and regular maintenance, but there is a need for further training and standardization of clinical practices. Validating the questionnaire and developing clinical guidelines are essential steps to improve the management of PID in Portugal.
