Abstract(s)
Intervention projects related to communication through art aim to, in general, surpass the limitations that cause barriers to the participation of disabled people, giving them alternate ways to express themselves and communicate. There is belief in the idea that through producing art, one also learns, as the visual arts constitute different languages and forms of expression. The designs, splatters of paint and the lines that joint together on a sheet of paper are all able to transmit different messages, even if these are not obvious at first glance. Having Multiple Disabilities is one of the factors that leads to great communication difficulties, consequently leading to a lower number of opportunities for development and learning, and, in many cases, a learned passiveness. The objective of this project centres on the role of art, namely artistic expression, as a means of personal and social development. Hence, the activities proposed are focused on communicative interaction and the participation of people with multiple disabilities, bringing together six people who visit an Occupational Activities Centre. The first approach, taking into account the characteristics of the participants, was to implement artistic expression activities, with low technology resources (paper, paint, mood boards, PECS cards). In these activities, the participants started by using coloured pencils and exploring the different colours, allowing for sensory discoveries and means of expression. 10 activities were carried out with the participants, over the course of 6 months, some were group tasks while others were more individualised. At the end of the project, a higher level of participation was observed from the adults with multi-disability, both with their peers and also with the professionals from the Centre who support them. In some cases, improved image recognition and positive improvements in behaviour was also noticed. It was recognised that not all the intended objectives were met, but it was evident that the participants became more communicative, happier and more participative.
