Abstract(s)
A ética veterinária,
The present final course work, whose semester was carried out at the SOSVET Almada hospital, within the scope of the degree in Veterinary Nursing at the School of Biosciences of Elvas, describes the activities developed during the 12 weeks of internship from February 18 to May 8, 2025. The internship in which the student was inserted allowed the development of personal skills and specific competencies. The student autonomously performed 2830 typical nursing procedures such as clinical analyses, sample collection, medication administration, execution of dressings, among others, in 301 dogs and 356 cats, allowing greater professional experience and autonomy This project is divided into two parts. The first part addresses ethical considerations in the management of pain and suffering in companion animals, and how ethics play a role in promoting animal welfare and quality of life, from a perspective that goes beyond technical aspects. It highlights the responsibilities of the veterinary nurse (VN) in ensuring patient well-being, advocating for a holistic approach that considers the principles of animal welfare, the minimization of pain and suffering, and ethical decision-making in pain management. The second part includes a description of the activities carried out during the clinical internship, presenting statistical data related to the clinical setting and the tasks performed, a clinical case focusing on pain recognition in dogs and the multimodal approaches used in treatment, and the results of a questionnaire on the application of ethics in clinical settings by VN ́s. Veterinary ethics, combined with scientific knowledge, guide the management of pain and suffering in companion animals, with VN playing a key role in ensuring animal welfare and making responsible clinical decisions.
