The present study examined the impact of opening a Drug Consumption Room (DCR) on crime in the vicinity of the Pasteleira Housing Estate (Porto), comparing two homogeneous periods (12 months pre-DCR vs. 12 months post-DCR). The methodology combined descriptive and inferential analyses to enhance the robustness of the comparison, considering, the monthly mean of total reported crime and, an itemized analysis of crime typologies commonly associated with drug use. Results indicate that the monthly mean of total crimes did not undergo a statistically significant change between the two periods. However, the composition by crime typology shifted: following the DCR’s opening, the proportion of residential burglary (including attached areas) and theft from commercial or industrial premises increased, whereas motor-vehicle theft decreased; the remaining typologies under study remained stable. These findings converge with international literature specifically addressing this topic, suggesting that the establishment of a DCR is not associated with increased crime in its surrounding area.
