Abstract(s)
Abstract The interest in emotional intelligence has blossomed over the last few years in multiple social and organizational sectors, speading inclusively to command functions of police forces. Its applicability in leadership is, however, the issue that has generated the most controversy in the academic environment. Taking in consideration the scarcity of empirical research that relates emotional intelligence and effective leadership, this paper challenges this issues, identifying the strengths and vulnerabilities of the construct of emotional intelligence in the exercise of command. In order to achieve such goals, questionnaire survey measures of self and others ratings of Commanders were used, in the areas of emotional intelligence, leadership, performance, satisfaction and extra effort. The collected data refers to 250 military from GNR Territorial Command in Lisbon, 10 of which, acting as Detachment Commanders. The results indicate that emotional intelligence enhances the attainment of better performance in leadership, highlighting âothers emotion appraisalâ and the âuse of emotionâ by the Commander as the aspects that have the biggest influence on leadership. However, we found that when studying the dimensions of both grouped constructs, the only dimension of emotional intelligence that reveals significant values on satisfaction and extraordinary effort is âthe appraisal of others emotionsâ. As vulnerability, one can point out that the difference between the perception that Commanders have about their own emotional intelligence compared to that perceived by their military, negatively influences their exercise of command. This research provides additional empirical evidence supporting the application of emotional intelligence in the exercise of command in GNR, establishing itself as an important tool in the support of the organization and steering of training of their commanders in the right direction.
