O Estudo desta Dissertação assentou na problemática dos Cuidados Paliativos, mais concretamente nas Unidades de Cuidados Paliativos, e no papel que os Assistentes Sociais têm nas mesmas.
A população encontra-se cada vez mais envelhecida, sendo que são cada vez mais as doenças crónicas que afetam esta faixa etária.
“O doente em fim de vida é aquele que tem uma doença crónica e não apresenta possibilidades de cura, com agravamento dos sintomas, e cuja morte se espera que aconteça num curto espaço de tempo.” (Pacheco, 2004).
Este estudo ajuda para que haja maior compreensão do trabalho dos Assistentes Socias na área da saúde, neste caso em concreto na área dos Cuidados Paliativos, pois cada vez mais estes profissionais representam e têm um papel fundamental no que diz respeito ao trabalho com o doente e com a família.
Com isto, pretende mostrar a prática e o trabalho dos Assistentes Sociais numa Unidade de Cuidados Paliativos.
The Study of this Dissertation was based on the Palliative Care problem, more concretely in the Palliative Care Units, and the role that the Social Workers have in them. The population is becoming more and more aged, and chronic diseases that affect this type of population are more and more. "The end-of-life patient is one who has a chronic illness and presents no possibility of cure, worsening of symptoms, and whose death is expected to happen in a short time" (Pacheco, 2004). This study helps to increase the understanding of the work of the Health Assistants, in this case specifically in the area of Palliative Care, as more and more these professionals represent and play a fundamental role in the work with the patient and with the family. With this, this study intends to show the practice and the work of the Social Workers in a Palliative Care Unit.
