Abstract(s)
Nowadays, access to higher education is the natural follow‐up to the studies of the young Portuguese man and women. However, the choice of the degree and educational institution is a difficult and complex decision, leading the student to go through a set of stages and choices. Entering higher education is an important decision that can be influenced by several factors. This includes individual and social factors, inherent to the environment in which he graduated. The decision may be to opt for traditional education, admission to civil public higher education or private higher education, or one can choose military higher education. The Armed Forces, as institutions with their own higher education institutions, must therefore understand these processes to be able to anticipate and manage their human resources needs. This dissertation, it will address this issue not only in terms of organizational behavior and personnel management, but also in terms of human complexity and social factors. In this way, in addition to understanding this decision‐making process, it also sought to understand the motivations of those who enter these institutions and their attractiveness factors. Also focusing on what is the post‐entry experience and context at the Escola Naval, the Portuguese Naval Academy of focus of this study. Thus, a mixed study was pursed, being divided, 1st into a qualitative a 2nd quantitative followed by a 2nd quantitative part. For the 1st part, focusing on attractiveness and motivation factors, a questionnaire with 29 questions (24 multiple‐choice and 5 open‐ended) was applied. The sample of 415 responses represented almost all candidates for the 3 military higher education institutions (Portuguese Naval Academy, Military Academy and Air Force Academy). For the second part, a quantitative 17 items questionnaire was applied to assess respondent motivations and expectations. This one, applied only to students with placement in the Escola Naval, and had a sample of 49 responses. This dissertation allowed to conclude that the main motivations/attractive factors are a high ambition and desire for personal and institutionalsuccess, combined with high expectations in the skills they hope to acquire.
