Abstract(s)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic and disabling psychiatric condition characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions. It is estimated to affect approximately 1 to 4% of the global population, significantly compromising patients’ quality of life. Despite its prevalence, misconceptions and stigma surrounding the disorder still persist, which may hinder early diagnosis and even adherence to treatment. The present study aimed to assess the population’s perception regarding OCD and its therapeutic options through an exploratory investigation conducted via a questionnaire. Additionally, by providing an infographic at the end of the questionnaire, the study sought to contribute to health literacy about OCD and correct erroneous perceptions about the disorder. A literature review on OCD was conducted, and a mixed-methods investigation was carried out using an online questionnaire completed by 546 participants. The results showed that 90.3% of participants had heard of OCD; however, only 58% knew that it is an anxiety disorder. Despite the generally satisfactory level of public knowledge about OCD, gaps remain regarding the role of medications in its treatment. The population appears to be more aware of psychotherapy as a treatment for OCD than pharmacological therapy. These findings highlight the importance of promoting health literacy about this disorder, particularly regarding the available treatment options, contributing to early diagnosis, encouraging help-seeking behavior, and improving adherence to treatment.
