Abstract(s)
This internship report represents a fundamental component of the journey undertaken within the scope of the Master's Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing, specialized in Critical Care Nursing, at the Porto Nursing School. Herein, I intend to present a synthesis of the outcomes from the "Professional Internship with Report" Curricular Units (Module I – 15 ECTS and Module II – 30 ECTS), with particular emphasis on the acquisition process of both common and specific competencies by the Specialized Nurse in the field of Critical Care Nursing, as established in Regulations n.º 140/2019 and n.º 429/2018 of the Order of Nurses. The professional internship (modules I and II), integrated into the Master's Degree program, aimed primarily at developing specialized clinical skills, with a particular focus on the Critically Ill Person with compromised thermoregulation, namely hypothermia. Thus, a professional development project was outlined and consolidated with the theme: the Critically Ill Person with compromised thermoregulation: hypothermia. In the hospital setting, hypothermia is a common cause of hospitalization, resulting from acute illnesses or exacerbation of chronic conditions. It becomes crucial to ensure adequate monitoring of body temperature and to implement heating protocols and specific therapies to prevent and treat this condition. This was the issue that gave rise to the development of the competence development project in the field of Critical Care Nursing. In this report, I describe the clinical contexts where I conducted my internship, present three care plans, critically and reflectively describe how the contexts, clinical cases, and experiences contributed to the development of competencies, as well as explain the set of knowledge acquired regarding the project I outlined. The elaboration of this report was supported by the educational platform of the Porto Nursing School, "e4nursing", in use at the institution.
