| dc.description.abstract | Domestic dogs are the result of evolution, through the domestication, of wild canids and have their own reproductive characteristics, generally distinct from those of wild canids. Within the domestic dog species itself, males and females display behavioural and perceptual differences. The ability to predict the sex of puppies in a litter would be a new step forward in the control of canine reproduction, allowing breeders to adjust their production to the demands of the market and future owners. This review focuses on sex ratio variation, in particular the factors that have been shown to influence or not the sex ratio in domestic dogs and criticisms of the methodologies used to obtain these results. Currently, sexing is the most promising method of modifying the sex ratio. Furthermore, cryptorchidism, inbreeding, parental age, litter size, omega-3 supplementation, season of conception and lunar phase also have significant effects on sex ratio variation, despite the variation observed between breeds. However, the results must be treated cautiously due to the biases found in the research. Given the number of dog breeds and the inter-breed variability factor, the number of potential factors of variation and the lack of data and studies highlighted by the authors, new and more homogeneous research are therefore needed. | eng |
| dc.description.abstract | Os cães domésticos resultam da evolução, através da domesticação, de canídeos selvagens e apresentam características reprodutivas próprias, geralmente diferentes das dos seus parentes selvagens. No seio da própria espécie canina, os machos e as fêmeas apresentam diferenças comportamentais e percetivas. A capacidade de prever o sexo dos cachorros de uma ninhada representaria um avanço significativo no controlo da reprodução canina, permitindo aos criadores ajustar a sua produção às exigências do mercado e dos futuros tutores. Esta revisão centra-se na variação do sex-ratio, nomeadamente nos fatores que influenciam ou não esse rácio em cães domésticos, bem como nas críticas às metodologias utilizadas para obter esses resultados. Atualmente, a sexagem é o método mais promissor para modificar o sex-ratio. Além disso, o criptorquidismo, a consanguinidade, a idade parental, o tamanho da ninhada, a suplementação com ómega-3, a época da conceção e a fase lunar também têm efeitos significativos na variação do sex ratio, apesar das diferenças observadas entre raças. No entanto, os resultados devem ser tratados com precaução, devido aos enviesamentos encontrados na investigação. Novas investigações mais homogéneas são necessárias, tendo em conta o número de raças de cães e o fator de variabilidade entre elas, o número de potenciais fatores de variação e a falta de dados e estudos salientada pelos autores. | por |
