Abstract(s)
As part of the Curricular Unit Professional Internship with Report, this document is in the form of an internship report, developed as part of the Master's Degree Course in Pediatric Specialist Nursing at the Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto. Based on a critical and reflective analysis supported by scientific evidence, this report documents the path taken in the construction of the training course, in the different contexts of healthcare provision, by describing the activities carried out that contributed to the acquisition and development of common and specific skills for the Pediatric Specialist Nurse. With a view to developing specialised clinical skills with a focus on parental coping in the context of children with chronic diseases, Module I of the Professional Internship outlined the professional development project with the theme "A look at the Hope of parents of children with chronic disease", which was carried out in Module II. Hope, as a universal concept, has been recognised as a basic human response, promoting resilience and empowerment in the face of disease. The diagnosis of a disease in a child is a critical and impacting moment for the whole family. Throughout the process, different experiential stages emerge related to health needs, psychosocial coping and the mobilisation of resources of Hope. Recognising the inseparable binomial child/family and family-centred care in partnership, the Pediatric Specialist Nurse provides care in situations of special complexity, promoting the empowerment and coping of the child/family to chronic disease, through the practical demonstration of knowledge about strategies that promote Hope. The clinical journey in the different health contexts enabled the mobilisation and incorporation of knowledge and the development of activities that contributed to the acquisition of skills required for the Pediatric Specialist Nurse, with a focus on the implementation of interventions that promote Hope in parents of children with chronic diseases, with a view to quality and excellence care.
