Abstract(s)
The elements of the public security police, in the ruling of their duties, are often confronted with diverse critical factors. Independently of the response given, they need to act fast, putting their own lives and health at risk for the protection of public security. During these responses, there are several stressors that can trigger various reactions (including physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral), traumas and even pathologies, which may compromise their professional activity and several areas of their private lives. Though, the relevance of this research arises, which is related to the need to understand the impacts of police activity on police officers. For this purpose, through a qualitative approach, a study was developed which included semi-structured interviews, conducted in a semi-directive way, with 28 police officers of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command, from areas that include or do not include Sensitive Urban Areas (ZUS). After complete transcription of the interviews, they constituted the corpus on which content analysis was performed. The results revealed that both groups develop psychological, emotional and behavioral reactions as a result of the sources of stress inherent to each group, thus needing to adopt defense strategies to minimize the impacts. We highlight the need for a significant and immediate intervention to treat the symptoms, using for example the application of the Critical Incident Stress Management Program.
