Abstract(s)
Abstract This research and architecture project aimes at the improvement renewal of the Convento de São Francisco do Monte in Viana do Castelo, founded in 1392 by the Franciscans Observants. It is constituted as the first convent to exist in the, then, Viana vilage, located in a secluded spot, surrounded by farmland and orchards, with abundant water. With the extinction of religious orders in 1834, it remained more or less intact until the middle of the twentieth century, and is currently ruined. However, there are still several artistic and architectural elements of recognized importance that document the successive phases through which it has passed. With the intention of keeping alive the memories and values of this building, and filling a void in the preservation and conservation of our heritage, this dissertation approaches this architectural set, identifying its varied values and analyzing strategies of intervention in religious heritage, defining a intervention strategy for the Convento of S. Francisco. The research method is the use of documentary analysis, collection of existing data and field work, photographs, sketches, field notes and diagnosis, allowing to start from general contextual analysis to the particular case of the building. We analyze four study cases of interventions in the conventual patrimony, in an equivalent situation. The themes discussed here contribute to the knowledge of the place of intervention, it's history and specific problems that characterize the particular context in which the project develops. The information collected, its conclusions and final results are the bases and principles applied in the design options.
