Abstract(s)
Entitled Radiopositioning Systems History, this dissertation intends to make a historical overview of the main radionavigation systems of the twentieth century. This dissertation theme arises by observing that, the younger generations of Portuguese Navy officers, show a complete lack of knowledge regarding the systems that were of utmost importance the twentieth century navigation. Young officers have the ability to perform astronomical navigation, geo navigation and operate with the latest GPS systems. However, regarding the systems used in the last century, any knowledge about the subject is minimal or nonexistent. This dissertation intends to impart this part of history so that future generations do not live in ignorance of such an important milestone as the evolution of navigation we know today was. This dissertation is based on a vast research work, based on the research of documentary collections and primary sources. Several documents containing paramount information were made available by the Navy’s library and the Hydrographic Institute’s library, which were a major factor to the enrichment of this project. In this dissertation, it is intended to present, for each of the radionavigation systems, a historical background, a description of its main characteristics and operating modes, types of auxiliary documents used and associated errors. At last, it is intended to demonstrate the transition made to current satellite navigation systems.
