Abstract(s)
The sleep playing a fundamental role, from the biological, emotional, and social point of view, is increasingly being recognized as a determining factor to children health. An unsuitable sleep may have consequences on emotional and behavioral regulation, and also on cognitive and metabolic functions. For these reasons, healthy sleeping habits are crucial to child’s development. It is on the first year of life that sleep pattern has its greatest evolution and sleep is even more important, because it is during this phase that secretion of essential grown hormones and child development occurs. It is also during this time that routines should be initiated. The importance and impact of sleep on health has recently deserved more attention, with sleeping problems being a common source of concern to parents and professionals. Nurses are seen as an essential stakeholder for the promotion of healthy sleeping habits on children. Taking all these aspects into consideration it is very important to explore and deepen knowledge on child’s sleep habits, special in the first year of life, and apply them on health promotion. From a reflective methodology, this work is supported by the main pillars of pediatrics: the philosophy of caring focused on family, the partnership of taking care, the anticipatory care and the Kolcaba´s theory about confort, with the following goals: Developing common and specific skills of Specialist Nurse, and the Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing, and Master in Nursing on the process of health/illness of the different steps of and family development, on different pediatric environment; Developing skills to promote healthy sleeping habits of the young/child and family, especially on the suckling child. Through a critical and reflective analysis, this work reports the activities carried out on different internship contexts showing the development of skills and the contribution of knowledge and strategies to the problem under study and, consequently, for the advancement of Nursing.
