Abstract(s)
Burnout syndrome, also known as professional exhaustion syndrome, is a psychological condition defined by a state of emotional exhaustion, physical fatigue and cognitive fatigue. This condition can appear at any stage of the academic and/or career path. The syndrome has a particular incidence in medical and dental students, with a higher percentage of affected students than in other areas. The aim of this research was to assess the prevalence of burnout syndrome, as well as to ascertain the relationship between burnout syndrome and the year of study in students on the Integrated Master's Degree in Dental Medicine at the Egas Moniz School of Health & Science. A total of 212 students participated in this study, 85.4% of whom were female and 14.6% male. In addition to a sociodemographic questionnaire, validated Portuguese versions of self-response questionnaires were used, namely the Maslach Burnout Inventory for students and the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory - student version. Compared with previous studies, the prevalence of burnout at the institution under study revealed more encouraging results, although the higher prevalence of the syndrome in the pre-clinical years should be emphasized. The identification of burnout among pre-clinical dental students and the prevention of this syndrome through various strategies in the teaching programme can be useful in providing a more favorable and compatible teaching environment, both preclinical and clinical.
