This study examined how the Portuguese Public Security Police, as an institution, could foster more effective, reliable, and coherent police testimony in court. Empirical evidence was collected from 1,461 police officers and 102 judicial magistrates using a structured questionnaire comprising subscales on self-assessment of performance in court and valuation of testimony. Attendance in the Criminal Investigation Course was associated with higher perceived performance in court and greater centrality attributed to testimonial evidence, and this advantage was also acknowledged by magistrates. An experience effect was also observed, whereby more frequent court appearances were related to better management of cross-examination and greater stability of testimony. Institutionally, the findings supported integrating practicaltestimony training into foundational courses, providing transversal continuing education for active officers, and consolidating standard operating procedures that ensured source separation, contemporaneous recording of confidence levels, and full recording of interviews. These measures translated into improved traceability of evidential pathways and reduced variability across services and functional profiles.
