Abstract(s)
The present research project presents a study carried out in two settings, nursery and kindergarten. The main objective was to explore the following theme: children’s autonomy in early childhood education contexts, with a focus on the role of the early childhood educator, with the research question being “How can the educator promote children’s autonomy in nursery and kindergarten?”. Specifically, the aim was to understand what autonomy consists of and how the educator can promote it, that is, how they can support and facilitate the development of this competence. The approach adopted was qualitative research, following the actionresearch approach. For data collection and analysis, I used observation, field notes, photographic records, document analysis, a questionnaire survey, content analysis, and group discussions with the children. I also carried out three planned interventions and one observation, all related to the theme, these with theoretical research and educator’s responses, enabled me to answer the research question. Through writing this report, I came to understand that autonomy is an essential competence for the overall development of the child, with the educator playing a fundamental role in its promotion. It is up to the educator to provide meaningful experiences and to organize space and routines in a way that allows the child to act autonomously in their daily life.
