Abstract(s)
The present report was prepared within the scope of the first edition of the Master Program in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in Nursing for Person in Critical Situation, at Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto (ESEP). The goal of this report is to describe the process of development and acquisition of common and specific competencies within the scope of a Nurse Specialist in nursing for people in critical situations, as recommended in Regulations No. 140/2019 and No. 429/2018. Continued investment in the development of competencies is essential for providing effective, safe, and high-quality clinical practices, ensuring the best possible care for individuals according to their specific needs. During the Master's program, I was encouraged to develop a project within a specific area of knowledge that was of interest to me. This project aims to address the domain of airway clearance, more specifically, the decision-making process for the Airway Suctioning intervention. Suctioning of secretions is a common daily practice for nurses worldwide (Strickland, 2022). The high frequency with which this intervention is performed often leads to its trivialization and underestimation of its risks. Respiratory problems are one of the main causes of admission to emergency services, and the presence of secretions in the airways can lead to respiratory complications such as the risk of infection or, in more severe cases, complete airway obstruction. Suctioning of secretions is an autonomous intervention performed by nurses, requiring careful planning, execution, and evaluation. In this report, I describe the clinical contexts of my internship, present three care plans, and describe critically and reflectively how the contexts, clinical cases, and experiences contributed to the development of competencies as a Specialist Nurse. Finally, I explain the set of knowledge acquired regarding the project I outlined
