From an early age, human development is subject to the influence of experiences that can have a significant impact on individuals. Both positive and adverse experiences during childhood can have repercussions throughout adulthood. The literature has shown that adverse childhood experiences can increase psychopathological symptoms, such as obsessive-compulsive symptoms. On the other hand, positive childhood experiences can have a protective effect on the development of psychopathology. Difficulties in emotional regulation may also have an impact on the development of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between positive and adverse childhood experiences, obsessive-compulsive symptoms and difficulties in emotional regulation. The sample consisted of 206 adults (168 women and 38 men) who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Benevolent Childhood Experiences Scale, the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale - Short Form and the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised. The results showed significant relationships between the variables under study and differences between sexes in obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Regression analyses demonstrated the predictive role of sex, age, positive childhood experiences and emotional neglect in obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Difficulties in emotional regulation were found to be a partial mediator of the relationship between positive childhood experiences and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, as well as the relationship between emotional neglect and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Positive childhood experiences were found to moderate the relationship between physical neglect and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. These results highlight the importance of positive and adverse childhood experiences for the development of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, as well as the mediating role of difficulties in emotional regulation.
