Abstract(s)
Suicide and behaviors within the suicidal sphere are considered complex and multifaceted phenomena. It is a current issue, presenting a significant impact not only on the individual but also on the entire family and community. Depression is closely associated with this problem and is the leading cause contributing to suicides. The prison environment is recognized as a particular context for the development of these behaviors due to the presence of risk factors. Therefore, it becomes crucial to find intervention strategies that facilitate the individual’s relationship with themselves and the environment they are in. One of the strategies devised involved the use of expressive mediators to facilitate the expression of emotions, feelings, and thoughts, thereby triggering processes of self-awareness, insight building, promotion of creativity and reasoning regarding new avenues for resolution, development of social skills, and assessment/promotion of the will to live and envision one’s future. Thus, our objectives for this study were: to identify/characterize behaviors within the suicidal sphere, to understand the role of these behaviors in individuals’ life histories, to acquire skills in facilitating therapeutic groups using expressive mediators, and to evaluate the impact of using expressive mediators in the therapeutic relationship. In line with these objectives, we implemented intervention programs using visual arts as an expressive mediator. The programs involved eight adults of both sexes, ranging in age from 24 to 59 years old. Individual and group sessions were conducted. At the end of each session, there was a moment of sharing and we observed that the expression of ideas, emotions/feelings and experiences was being developed and deepened, as well as the ability to socialize. The results we obtained from the interventions aimed at developing skills in terms of expressing emotions, self-knowledge and socialization, reducing social isolation, which had an impact on mood, discovering of individual potential, and an increase in hope and self-esteem.
