O presente estudo apresenta os resultados de uma investigação que procura compreender a forma como a sociedade, os colegas de farda e as mulheres policiais militares posicionam-se quanto à representação sócio-profissional da profissão em exame, desempenhada pela classe feminina diante das demandas exigidas pela sociedade atual. Além disso, aborda-se o papel do efetivo feminino na corporação, se há discriminação de gênero e as dificuldades em exercer uma ocupação predominantemente masculina. Buscam-se, também, possíveis mudanças que melhorem a imagem institucional. O problema sociológico em causa urge questionar se o trabalho desenvolvido pela classe feminina na polícia militar de Santo Ângelo - objeto do estudo de caso - atende aos anseios da sociedade contemporânea.
Para cumprimento desse objetivo, sob cariz teórico da revisão da literatura, abarca-se não só um breve histórico da evolução feminina na esfera global e na polícia, mas também conceituações sobre profissão. Desenvolve-se pesquisa de campo qualitativa, mediante inquérito por entrevista semidirigida a dois grupos distintos: atores internos (policiais militares femininos e masculinos) e externos.
No detalhamento da pesquisa a respeito do exercício da profissão por mulheres, são abordadas questões como: a necessidade de força física, a dificuldade em ultrapassar a cultura machista, a habilidade para solução de conflitos com humanidade, a equiparação de direitos, o reconhecimento institucional, a qualificação, o empoderamento da profissão, a consciencialização da importância e valorização das peculiaridades femininas na instituição, a credibilidade da Brigada Militar e as expectativas da sociedade contemporânea.
The present study shows the results of an investigation to understand how society, military colleagues and the own female military police officers stand about the socio-professional representation of the profession in question, performed by the female class in face of the demands of the current society. In addition, it addresses the role of women in the corporation, if there is gender discrimination and the difficulties in exercising a predominantly male occupation. Changes are also sought to improve the institutional image. The sociological problem seeks to question whether the work developed by the female class in the military police of Santo Ângelo - object of the case study - meets the longings of contemporary society. To fulfill this objective, under a theoretical approach to literature review, a brief history of female evolution in the global sphere and in the police, as well as conceptualizations on the profession, is included. Qualitative field research is developed through semi-directed interviews with two different groups: internal actors (female and male military police) and external actors. In the detailing of the research about the exercise of the profession by women, issues such as the need for physical strength, the difficulty in overcoming the macho culture, the ability to solve conflicts with humanity, the equalization of rights, institutional recognition, qualification, empowerment of the profession, awareness of the importance and appreciation of the feminine peculiarities in the institution, the credibility of the Military Brigade and the expectations of contemporary society.
