A análise fatorial confirmatória evidenciou ajustamento estrutural satisfatório (CFI = 0,911; RMSEA = 0,100), validando a estrutura teórica do instrumento.
Introduction: Oral diseases remain a major public health issue, with a significant impact on individuals’ quality of life and overall well-being. Oral health literacy, defined as the ability to access, understand, and apply information related to oral health, is a key determinant for adopting preventive behaviours and for the appropriate use of dental care services. Objective: The objective of this study was the cultural adaptation and validation of the Health Literacy in Dentistry instrument (HeLD-29) for the Portuguese population, aiming to reliably assess oral health literacy levels. Materials and Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional study conducted at the Egas Moniz Dental Clinic. The sample consisted of 725 participants, aged 18 years or older, recruited consecutively among the clinic’s patients. The content validity, construct validity, consistency, and test-retest reliability were used to estimate the psychometric properties of the HeLD. Results: The results demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.92 for HeLD-29 and 0.91 for HeLD-14) and high test–retest reliability (ICC ≈ 0.9), confirming the temporal stability and homogeneity of responses. Confirmatory factor analysis showed satisfactory structural validity (CFI = 0.911; RMSEA = 0.100), supporting the theoretical structure of the instrument. Conclusions: The Portuguese version of the HeLD proved to be reliable, valid, and culturally appropriate for assessing oral health literacy in the Portuguese adult population. The availability of this instrument will enable the development of future research and more effective public health policies aimed at promoting oral health and reducing inequalities in literacy and access to dental care.
