Abstract(s)
Through the advances in biotechnology and the patent expiration of some of the major high-cost biological medicines, the production of biossimilars has become possible and increasingly profitable for the companies that produce them. A biosimilar is a biological medicine highly similar to another biological medicine already approved called "reference medicine" in terms of structure, biological activity, efficacy, safety profile and immunogenicity. These biological medicines offer new treatment options for various conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases and various types of cancer. Biosimilar drugs are still relatively recent in the therapeutic arsenal when compared to chemically synthesized drugs. Given their characteristics and specificities, this type of medicine requires the health professional’s new knowledge and practical skills, so that they can prescribe, inform and advise for the best use of them. The main objective of this study was to a bibliographic revision, and also, to obtain a comprehensive view of the knowledge, behaviors and practices of pharmacy community or hospital professionals on biosimilars medicines in Portugal. For this purpose, we performed an observational and cross-sectional study on a sample of Pharmacy Professionals from the hospital and community areas. Data collection was done through an online questionnaire. Our sample consisted of 105 individuals, mostly women (80%), with a bachelor's degree (58.1%) and a master's degree (41%), 63.8% were Senior Pharmacy Technicians and 33% were Pharmacists. We found that 70.5% of professionals know what a biosimilar drug is, although the results of specific knowledge are not so assertive. In conclusion, the knowledge of the individuals in our sample about biosimilar medications is generally positive, and there are no statistically significant differences between the professional classes of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Supervisors.
