Nowadays, the hotel industry is subjected to several changes on different levels, such as technological and in the behavior of consumers. These mutations demand hotel managers to give a special attention to the training of employees, being this one of the methods to develop the competencies needed to perform their jobs with increased performance in order to maximize the firm’s competitiveness. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to study how the development of competencies through training affects employees’ performance in the hotel industry. The research design is exploratory, and data will be collected using qualitative methods based on case studies. The results indicate that, on average, managers perceive the average performance of the hotel industry workers as very good and that there is a consensus on which competencies are more important for those performance outcomes, as well as on the importance of training to develop those competencies. In what concerns the relevance of people for the hotel strategy, human resources management practices are determinant. Specifically, there is a need to invest in training but this must be in accordance with the firm’s strategy. Key-
