Abstract(s)
A par do
Old age is a stage of life, during the ageing process, in which their changes gradually occur, at a biopsychosocial level, and not from a specific age. This research is concerned with how old age is socially represented, highlighting the elderly people’s view. In this way, the main purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding how old age is represented by them. The study was based on a qualitative approach, through an exploratory study. The collected data resulted from semi-structured interviews with six elderly people resident in municipality of Crato, aged from seventy to eight-two years old, of both genders. In general, the conclusions match with the presented theoretical proposals. Old age is represented as an individual experience, in which changes and inherent signs to the passing of time that don’t reduce to the single lack of disease. In addition, elderly people represent old age as something negative, in line with the way they consider how it is represented by society, showing that they have already interiorized it, although they also keep a positive representation of it. When elderly people represent themselves, there are some divergences, confirming that they don’t identify themselves with the social representation formulated, due to their singularities, in a heterogeneous group.
