Abstract(s)
Background: Periodontitis is a common disease in the oral cavity, characterized by a chronic inflammatory response in the periodontal tissues, resulting in irreversible problems such as tooth mobility, tooth loss, and bone loss. The aim of the observational study was to explore the relationship between periodontal status and Oral Health Value Scale (OHVS) in a population of adults. Material & Methods: Using a comprehensive assessment tool and self-reported measures of periodontitis and dental caries experience, we surveyed those who sought a first appointment at the EGAS MONIZ DENTAL CLINIC (EMDC). Participants completed a questionnaire comprising a Sociodemographic questionnaire, the Oral Health Value Scale (OHVS-PT), the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and a self-reported measure of periodontitis. Caries experience was assessed by clinical observation using the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT), combined with orthopantomography for more accurate results. Due to the non-normal distribution of the sample, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. Results: We obtained a final sample of 380 participants with a mean age of 43.3 years. Patients with a self-reported periodontitis score of "1" were lower in 3 of the 4 OHVS-PT subdomains compared with those with a score of "0" (negative). Analyzing the OHVS by sex, women reported higher scores in all subdomains, with significant differences in 3 of them. Conclusions: In this study we found that there is a difference in some parameters of the oral health values according to the periodontal status of the respondents. In the fields of professional dental care, appearance and health as well as retention of natural teeth, we found lower values when compared to participants without self-reported periodontitis.
