Na nova ordem mundial em que os Estados Unidos da América restaram como a única
potência global, começam a emergir países com reconhecidas potencialidades e que poderão, a
médio prazo, alterar as relações internacionais e estarmos de novo a caminhar para um sistema
bipolar ou multipolar. De entre estes actores, é certamente a República Popular da China quem
teve um maior desenvolvimento, conseguindo manter o regime político comunista ao mesmo
tempo que se sujeita às leis internacionais do mercado e adere à Organização Mundial do
Comércio.
Este trabalho começa por abordar a milenar história da China, a sua caracterização
geoestratégica e geopolítica para depois analisar o actual relacionamento bilateral e multilateral
na região em que se insere, com a União Europeia e com Portugal em particular.
Por fim serão levantados alguns cenários possíveis para o futuro da RPC e as condições em
que eles se possam vir a concretizar, procurando dar alguns contributos à interrogação de todo o
mundo, “o que virá a ser a RPC a médio e longo prazo?” Abstract: In the new world order where the USA remains the single global power, new countries are
emerging with well known capabilities that could, in the near future, change international
relations and lead us to a bipolar or multipolar system.
Among these players, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is definitely the one that has
experienced greater growth, retaining the communist regime as well as accepting international
trade regulations and joining the World Trade Organization.
This essay starts by looking at the millenary history of China, its geostrategic and
geopolitical characteristics, moving on to an analysis of the present bilateral and multilateral
relations in its geographic area, as well as with the EU and particularly with Portugal.
This essay will conclude by raising some hypothetical scenarios in the future of PRC and
the circumstances in which they might be realized, as well as trying to contribute to the universal
question “what is the PRC going to be in the short and the long term ?”
