Abstract(s)
Breaking bad news to a family about their child's developmental disorder is not always well received. Family dynamics undergo a variety of changes, so the way in which the announcement of bad news is communicated can be very significant in terms of the repercussions it can have on the lives of the family and the child. The protocols or guidelines are an aid for the professional, in that they define certain procedures that can help them when announcing bad news. This research seeks to understand the perception of the health professional(s) on the way they communicate to the family that their child has a developmental disorder and to understand the perception of the family(ies) on the way they were informed of their child's problem. To this end, we used a qualitative methodology, carrying out a multiple case study and using semi-structured interviews as the data collection technique. The participants were three health professionals and three families with children with developmental disorders. We concluded that families who experience the announcement of bad news about a child's developmental disorder experience feelings of anger, anguish, sadness, doubt and guilt. Families believe that professionals should be better prepared to communicate bad news, and stress that they should have the support of another professional in the field of psychology when communicating the news. Health professionals, on the other hand, also experience discomfort when delivering bad news, they can't manage their emotions well and mention that they don't have the support or training to be able to support and manage the emotions and feelings of families and themselves. They say that what should be done when communicating bad news is multidisciplinary work.
