Abstract(s)
Currently, the issues raised by the impact of the climate crisis have been a subject of great concern, given the repercussions felt in the lives and health of populations, as well as in the balance of ecosystems. This dissertation seeks to correlate how the promotion of more sustainable practices in dentistry can contribute to an approach which is efficient, safe and with a lower environmental impact, with the aim of fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals established in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. Waste reduction emerges as a priority, which can be achieved through the promotion of oral health and prevention of oral pathologies, thereby minimizing waste and the carbon footprint associated with the provision of care. Responsible use of resources such as water and energy, and a preference for sustainable dental materials, are key elements in minimizing the environmental impact in dentistry. Recycling, particularly of single-use plastics, is one of the fundamental measures to prevent environmental pollution that could result in the ingestion of microplastics by marine life and, subsequently, humans. Education and awareness of the importance of sustainability play an essential role, which can be achieved by integrating sustainable fundaments into the curriculum of the Integrated Master's degree in Dentistry and in scientific committees, promoting these practices amongst future healthcare professionals and researchers. This will pave the way for continuous efforts to develop innovative alternatives that further reduce the environmental impact of this sector. In summary, this dissertation addresses the environmental footprint in dentistry, as well as sustainable approaches that can be implemented in clinical practice, emphasizing the significance of as a fundamental component in building a more conscientious healthcare system aligned with the vision of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda.
