Abstract(s)
Domestic Violence belongs to a criminal typology with high levels of prevalence, and it appears to be one of the biggest challenges faced by the Police in everyday life. It consists on the violation of human rights in a context of intimacy, in which, normally, one would feel safer and more supported. Many victims remain in silence until they get help from someone or bravely ask for it themselves. The impact of this kind of violence is extremely severe for the victims, mainly due to the fact that the aggressor is their partner, in whom the victim trusts and with whom they have a relationship. Research in this matter is justified, precisely, by the brutal impact that this kind of violence exerts in its victims. Often, the Police is the first respondent to this issue, since the victim often reaches out for their help, and that is why police offers working at Police Stations must be prepared to intervene when facing such a situation. Whether they are responding to a call for help concerning this issue, or personally dealing with the victim on the station, they should be able to deal with the problem professionally and in the best way possible. Thus, in this paper we studied data concerning the beliefs held by officers working in two drastically different Police Commands, with the intention of focusing on the role of their professional experience. The results appear to show that there is hardly any difference between Lisbon's and Beja's police officers' beliefs regarding this criminal matter. However, we believe that there is still room for improvement, and that this is the path that must be followed in the future.
