Abstract(s)
Introduction: In order to reduce the descoloration of fluorotic teeth, there are several viable treatments that diverge between the more conservative choices (tooth whitening, microabrasion and infiltrated resin) and less conservative (direct and indirect restorations, such as veneers or crowns), taking into consideration that the choice of treatment always depends on the clinic case and the harshness of fluorosis the patient has. Objetives: With this review, we intend to evaluate the success of microabrasion and external whitening as isolated and combined treatments, in cases of dental fluorosis. Materials and Methods: The literature was searched from January 2010 up until August 2020, for articles on approaches of treatment and therapy for dental fluorosis, more directed to microabrasion and external bleaching. The databases used were PubMed and Google Scholar. The filters were altered to randomized clinical trial, human trial, clinical trial and free full text. To search for articles, the following keys were used: dental fluorosis, dental fluorosis treatment, dental fluorosis treatment success, microabrasion and external bleaching success in the treatment of dental fluorosis. Results: The results of this systematic review are based on success rates for microabrasion, external bleaching and the combination of both, for the treatment of fluorosis in a sample ranging from one to seventy people, with various levels of fluorosis, assessed by different indexes. The risk of bias is low and the uncertainty varies between 0.845 and 0.983. Conclusão: Microabrasion and external whitening treatments are effective in treating dental fluorosis both separately and together. In conclusion more studies are needed with less uncertainty associated with the results and with greater follow up.
