Abstract(s)
This study investigates the social and labour reintegration of former inmates in Portugal, addressing the barriers, strategies, and factors that influence this process. The main objective is to analyse social exclusion, the stigma associated with criminal records, and the role of family and institutional support networks in social and professional reintegration. A qualitative approach was adopted, including semi-structured interviews with former inmates, social reintegration professionals, and a human resources manager, complemented by document analysis. Data collection considered full transcriptions, enabling a detailed and systematic content analysis. Sources included primary testimonies and specialized literature for theoretical grounding. The results highlight the importance of social capital, professional training, and family support as mediators of successful reintegration, as well as the challenges posed by social prejudice and institutional limitations. Findings indicate that the implementation of integrated public policies, together with strengthened support networks, can enhance social inclusion, reduce recidivism, and promote the dignity and autonomy of former inmates.
