Abstract(s)
Introduction: Orthodontics is a dentistry specialism that promotes normoocclusion, presenting functional and aesthetic improvement. It also has a beneficial effect on both the masticatory and respiratory patterns of an individual. During the orthodontic treatment, urgency situations sometimes occur, requiring clinical assistance to avoid putting the treatment at risk. Objective: The main goal of this study is to examine the types of medical urgencies which occur in the Orthodontics Assistance Consultation at Egas Moniz Dental Clinic (CDEM) to assess the urgency aetiology and to devise preventive measures in order to minimise its frequency. Materials and Methods: In this study, 137 medical files from patients who received orthodontic treatment at Egas Moniz Dental Clinic were analysed. In total, 354 orthodontic urgency situations were gathered, and later 11 different groups were formulated: group 1 (Orthodontic archwire), group 2 (Orthodontic Tubes and Bands), group 3 (Brackets), group 4 (Ligatures), group 5 (Associated with subjective sensations), group 6 (Related to pain, inflammation and infection), group 7 (Functional appliances), group 8 (Palatal appliances), group 9 (Microimplants), group 10 (Clearing patient’s doubts) and group 11 (Other situations). Then all data were statistically analysed, according to Statistics Package for the Social Sciences software (SPSS), version 26.0 (IBM, New York, USA). Results: From the urgency situations described in the clinical logs, 106 are related to group 1, 43 to group 2, 83 to group 3, 22 to group 4, 2 to group 5, 22 to group 6, 5 to group 7, 44 to group 8, 13 to group 9, 2 to group 10 and 12 to group 11. Conclusion: This study showed that the urgent patients who go to CDEM to solve orthodontic problems were mainly women from 11 to 20 years of age. Most of the patients were students and lived in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo. Most urgency situations concerned fixed orthodontic appliances predominantly related to group 1 (Orthodontic archwire) and to group 3 (Brackets).
