Abstract(s)
There is scientific evidence that emotional regulation and post-traumatic growth may be associated in people with substance abuse, despite the lack of empirical studies supporting this association. This research therefore aims to assess the relationship between trauma, substance use, emotional regulation and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in a sample of the general French population. It also aims to compare people who have received psychological support with those who have not received it. The sample included 176 people with an average age of 31.63 years (SD = 15), divided into two groups: 74 people who had received or are receiving psychological support and 102 who had not received psychological support. Were used a questionnaire containing socio-demographic data and data on substance use (ASSIST), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation French Scale (DERS-F), a questionnaire containing data on the traumatic event(s) experienced, the Level of Stress after Trauma, the Post-traumatic disorder Checklist (PCL-5) and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI-X). The results show that emotional regulation difficulties are significantly related to the severity of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSD) and substance use. In turn, PTG is significantly related to emotional regulation difficulties and substance use. As far as comparisons between the groups are concerned, statistically significant differences were observed in all the tests used. It was also found that certain aspects of substance use mediate PSPT and PTG. A qualitative study or taking other factors into account would provide a more complete understanding.
