Abstract(s)
Abstract: Popular Marine Architecture is a pending subject in Galicia, since only in the present time an interest has arisen in connection of this kind of architecture and with everything related to the sea. Not only towards the material heritage, but also towards the non material one. This dissertation will target the study of the loss of character or the evolution of A Marina district, in which we will analyze and make known the causes of this possible change, starting from the fact that this district is a good example to be studied thanks to its characteristics, both social and physionomic. To carry out this work three objectives have been defined, which aim at giving an answer to the question : loss of character or evolution? The first objective seeks to Identify the typological and constructive characteristics of the Popular Marine Architecture in the so called A Marina district in La Guardia, thus allowing us to find out the present condition of the dictrict, regarding its preservation conditions, its typologies, the building materials of its faƧades, its different building sizes and the years in which they were built. This will allow us to address the second objective, which aims at Determining the change process of marine houses from their original spatial and formal structure to the configurations that presently exist, choosing four study cases in which we will analyze the parameters given by the indicators. With the data drawn from both objectives an answer will be given to the last objective. This objective is meant to Define orientating principles leading to an increased appreciation of Popular Marine Architecture, thus underlining the value of this heritage within the A Marina district, which could be considered when it comes to reshaping the district, thus enabling the incumbents to take them into account, not only the original buildings, but also all the aspects of the district. The methodology used is split into two phases: the first one consists of an Architectural Mapping of the District (quantitative study), where all the district buildings are analyzed and characterized. In a second phase, qualitative study, four study cases will be analyzed, after selecting them in accordance with the epochs defined within the theoretical framework (social and economic evolution) in an individual way, in order to carry out later a comparative analysis. All in all, we want to state that the district still has its own social character, which has brought an important change in its architectural physionomy, thus allowing a re-interpretation of the marine house in present times.
