A microbiota intestinal é constituída por vários microrganismos que compõem o Trato Gastro Intestinal
(TGI) dos animais de companhias. Este é constituído maioritariamente por bactérias, e podemos
encontrar em menor quantidade fungos e vírus. Todos estes microrganismos desempenham um papel
preponderante nos processos vitais e na saúde do hospedeiro e na saúde e prevenção da doença em
cães e gatos.
Existem vários fatores que podem influenciar a microbiota dos animais de companhia, a raça, idade,
hipersensibilidade, Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) e o contacto com o Homem. A alimentação dos
cães e dos gatos tem um impacto muito importante através da composição das dietas, promovendo a
modificação da prevalência de bactérias presentes na microbiota intestinal. Dietas desequilibradas
podem conduzir ao aparecimento de disbiose, que se caracteriza por um desequilíbrio na composição
da microbiota intestinal, comprometendo a sua biodiversidade através da diminuição da estabilidade
das populações microbianas que a constituem.
A disbiose vai ter como consequência o desenvolvimento de doenças como enteropatias crónicas, ou
diarreia hemorrágica aguda.
A importância do equilíbrio da microbiota intestinal é fundamental para a saúde dos animais de
companhia. Encontram-se disponíveis várias abordagens terapêuticas para o tratamento de episódios
de disbiose, como a utilização de pré e probióticos, ou, mais recentemente o transplante de microbiota
intestinal. Todas estas aabordagens apresentam benefícios para o hospedeiro contribuindo para a
resolução de diferentes quadros clínicos.
