Abstract(s)
The present research work is under the theme: "Development of leadership and performance in recent junior Infantry Officers - Commandos Course". The objectives established for this research were to understand if the development of leadership and performance characteristics were noticed by the Officers that complete the Commandos course, to understand if there are benefits for the junior officer to take the Commandos course. To evaluate leadership characteristics, the American Army's leadership model was used, and performance was considered to be performance under stressful conditions, military performance (technical and tactical components) and physical performance (resilience and physical resistance). This thesis uses the American Ranger course as a basis for comparison with the Commandos course. A parallelism between both courses was created, since the former course is a leadership course, where leadership is worked on as well as technical and tactical competence, having already demonstrated its effectiveness in the American Army. Regarding methodology, the inductive method and a qualitative approach were followed. Initially, bibliographic and documental research was carried out, followed by interviews with Portuguese and American soldiers who had taken the Commandos course, the Ranger course, or both courses. Similarities were found in the training provided in the Commandos course and in the Ranger course and there was a consensus when asked if the Commandos course brings benefits to the junior Officer, with a perception of development of transformational leadership characteristics, development of performance under stress, military performance and physical performance. The interviewees and the results obtained affirm that the Commandos course is beneficial to the Officer's future career, having a positive impact not only in their daily lives, but also when deployed.
