Abstract(s)
Peri-implantitis is a common condition that compromises the success of dental implants and can ultimately lead to their failure. This pathology is characterized by inflammation of the soft tissues and bone surrounding the implant, resulting in irreversible bone loss, similar to the process seen in periodontitis. This review explores the anatomy and physiology to better understand the interaction between tissues and prosthetics, prosthetic biomechanics and occlusal adaptation, prosthetic materials, oral hygiene, and maintenance, all aimed at preventing peri-implantitis. Additionally, it addresses the role of microbial biofilm in the development of peri-implantitis, other risk factors, and clinical protocols recommended for patients with implant-supported prostheses. Furthermore, advancements in prosthetic technologies for implants and their impact on preventing peri-implantitis are discussed. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to have a deep understanding of the pathophysiology of peri-implant disease, as well as its diagnosis and treatment strategies. The implementation of effective preventive programs, along with the early detection of disease signs, is key to managing peri-implantitis and ensuring the longterm success of dental implants.
