Abstract(s)
therapy”, “Periodontal status”, “Orthodontics effects”,” Oral hygiene”.
Orthodontics has become an area of interest for many patients. An increasing number of adults are seeking orthodontic treatment, many of whom are likely to have some degree of periodontal compromise. The interaction between these specialties is becoming increasingly important in screening, prevention and treatment. Both periodontologists and orthodontists must understand each other's work and co-operate in clinical practice to provide the best possible treatment for their patients. Having a healthy periodontium is a prerequisite for any orthodontic treatment, which in turn must be adapted to each patient's periodontal condition. Orthodontics can also prevent periodontal damage by correcting causal factors, complementing periodontal treatment and stabilising long-term results. The orthodontist can play an active role in improving the prognosis of periodontal disease. Orthodontic treatment, in addition to its benefits, may entail periodontal risks and complications that should not be ignored. Fixed orthodontic appliances promote plaque retention and make brushing less effective. They cause both quantitative and qualitative changes in plaque, thus increasing the risk of caries and periodontal disease. The aim of this narrative review is to present the effects of orthodontic treatment on the periodontium. A bibliographic collection will be carried out in the search engines Pubmed, SciELO and Google Scholar, of scientific articles published in the last 10 years in English, Portuguese and French with the keywords: "Orthodontic therapy", "Periodontal status", "Orthodontics effects"," Oral hygiene".
