Abstract(s)
Residential care (RS) is a widely used child and youth protection measure in Portugal. This dissertation seeks to clarify how residential care, as a protective measure, can contribute to the development and autonomy of young people, as well as to understand the role of bonding with caregivers in this process. To this end, two questionnaires were developed. The first was administered to 16 young people in residential care, aiming to understand who their role models were before, during, and after their placement. The second was administered to 9 young people, who had completed their residential care some time before responding to the questionnaire. It aimed to clarify the importance of residential care in the lives of these young people, identify their role models, and the difficulties they experienced in the process of becoming independent. The results demonstrate that there is greater difficulty in bonding with caregivers in residential care when the placement is already in adolescence, and their level of satisfaction with residential care is lower, given the accumulation of adverse experiences during their lives. Evidence was also found regarding the importance of foster homes in the lives and future of all these young people, and several difficulties were identified in the transition to active life/the process of becoming independent.
