Abstract(s)
At Coimbra Agriculture School (ESAC, Escola Superior Agrária de Coimbra) there is a native wood of Atlantic Mediterranean features, with abundance of oak trees (e.g. Quercus faginea and Q. robur) and other species such as the laurel (Laurus nobilis). The fauna inventory is a crucial stage to establish the ecological value of the area, to provide the basis for and adequate management and for the conservation of the existing species. A total of 134 species, belonging to the taxonomic groups of the amphibians, birds, insects, mammals and reptiles, were inventoried. Thirty-three of these species (25%) are important for conservation because they are keystone species or because they have threatened conservation status. Despite the small size and isolation, the study area has a high number of species, of which the most abundant are birds (66 species; 49%), followed by insects (44 species; 33%). These results allow the conclusion that the ESAC woods have a high ecological value and special relevance for biodiversity conservation.
