Abstract(s)
Background: Parental divorce is an event that can affect family functioning, impacting everyone involved. Parental divorce can have consequences that last beyond childhood, influencing children's adult lives in terms of their interpersonal relationships, their experience of emotions, and their satisfaction with life. One of the areas frequently affected is marital relationships in adulthood, where difficulties are observed in terms of commitment and relationship satisfaction. Objectives: To verify the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), resilience and close relationships in adulthood; to compare a sample of individuals who had experienced their parents litigious divorce with a sample of individuals who had not, in terms of ACEs, resilience and closeness in relationships in adulthood; and to verify the predictors of avoidance towards a partner, anxiety towards a partner, avoidance towards a friend and anxiety towards a friend. Method and Procedures: The sample consisted of 353 participants, aged between 18 and 85 (M = 43.01, SD = 12.78). Data was collected through an online research protocol, which included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) instrument, the Resilience Scale (RS), and the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire (ERP). Results: Participants who experienced the litigious divorce of their parents showed more ACEs, higher levels of avoidance and anxiety in close relationships, and lower levels of resilience, regarding the meaning in life. Multiple linear regression analyses indicated that emotional neglect in childhood, experiencing litigious divorce from parents, and low levels of serenity and sense of life in adulthood are predictors of greater avoidance and anxiety in relationships with partners and friends. Conclusion: The results of this research reinforce that the experience of litigious parental divorce has implications for adult life, namely lower resilience and difficulties in building close relationships, whether marital or friendship.
