RESUMO
O reconhecimento da importância dos serviços dos ecossistemas para a subsistência do ser humano contribuiu para a valorização da ecologia urbana através da necessidade de conservação da diversidade ecológica, promovendo gradualmente a necessidade do planeamento e da gestão das áreas verdes. Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal o estudo do índice de biodiversidade urbana em diferentes cidades do globo, procurando analisar a importância da diversidade biológica para o bem-estar dos cidadãos e identificar os aspetos edafoclimáticos, sociais e económicos que maior impacto têm para o seu cálculo. Conclui-se que o Índice de Biodiversidade Urbana torna-se uma ferramenta potente para o desenvolvimento de uma melhoria contínua. O Índice torna possível avaliar os impactes de diferentes políticas e opções de planeamento e ordenamento territorial aumentando o desenvolvimento de planos de ação e estratégias locais mais específicas.

ABSTRACT The perception of the importance of ecossystem services for the subsistence of human beings has contributed to the appreciation of urban ecology through the need of conservation of ecology diversity, gradually promoting the need for planning and management of green areas. The main objetive of this work atre to raise the awereness of the importance of biological diversity for the weellbeing of the citizens and the identification of the edaphoclimatic, social and economic aspects that have the greastest impact for the calculation of the índex of urban biodiversity in diferente cities of the globe. It is concluded that the Urban Biodiversity Index becomes a powerful tool for the development of continuous improvement. The Index makes it possible to assess the impacts of different planning and spatial planning policies and options by increasing the development of more specific local action plans and strategies.
